There’s No Such Thing As A Mistake

Mistake
noun
an action or judgment that is misguided or wrong.“coming here was a mistake.”
Definition from Oxford Languages
Wow! What a definition. An action or judgment that is misguided or wrong. We didn’t view the act as wrong or misleading before carrying it out because if we had, we wouldn’t have proceeded with it. In the beginning, the decision to act was based on the thought that this choice would produce the desired result. We made a conscious decision to act on the choice we concluded would produce the desired result. Now, what takes the word mistake out of the equation is — “a conscious decision.”

When we decided to act on our choice, this wasn’t a mistake. People believe the decision was a mistake because the choice didn’t produce the desired result. This does not make the decision a mistake, it simply means that we made the inappropriate choice. There’s always more than one way to accomplish a particular goal, just as there are ways not meant to help us accomplish a particular goal. No matter how great we believe our plan is, if it’s not meant to produce the desired result, it won’t. But this doesn’t make it a mistake. How can we regard something as a mistake when it clearly shows us it won’t help us? That would be a blessing — right?
I’m sharing this offering because I see the word mistake being displayed in so many offerings I read. This word (and so many others, especially try.) discourages us. Remember. As we think and believe, so it shall be. If we think we’re making mistakes, eventually we may believe that giving up is the best course of action.
How can we regard something as a mistake when it clearly shows us it won’t help us? That would be a blessing — right?
We have become so conditioned by the ways of society that our first thought is to go with the flow instead of thinking going against the current. It’s easier not to cause waves than it is to swim into a tsunami and surf it as if it’s no big deal. Yes, it’s lonely when we decide to think for ourselves amid those who have grown accustomed to not thinking at all. But in due time our tribe will find us and when they do, we’ll realize the experience was well worth it.
