I discovered some time ago what the saying “less is more” truly means. Sure, they’ll be times when much more will be necessary, case in point, options on a restaurant menu. But getting back to less is more, and specifically focusing on verbal and written words. When we say too much, a person may get lost in translation, but if we don’t say enough, we may lose the chance to have our perspective understood. Like with everything, the key is to find a balance that will produce the desired result more often than not.
When asked what it is I do for a living, I say, “I’m a writer.” This revelation doesn’t need to be elaborated on any further. It answers the question precisely. But once it’s revealed, it inspires one question in particular, which is: “What have you written?” Which I quickly reply, “The better question would be, what haven’t I written?” After the initial surprise dies down, the next response is usually, “I always wanted to write a book.” True story.
