In an upscale restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, two friends had just finished eating dinner and were now engaged in conversation.
“So, Marvin. How is it you have it all?” Derrick Jackson said. The twenty-five-year-old was ruggedly handsome and looked noticeably uncomfortable in the suit he wore. The outfit and the scene weren’t his cup of tea, but his friend was treating and he was never one to turn down a free meal.
Marvin Green chuckled, “I don’t have it all, D’. But what I have, I appreciate.”
Unlike Derrick, the fifty-year-old looked as if he was a top model for G Q Magazine. He lived for moments like this, literally.
“Bro, it seems as if you catch all the lucky breaks.”
“There’s no such thing as luck, D’. It’s about always being prepared to take advantage of any opportunity.”
“How?”
“Well, in my case. I always have a great attitude. A great attitude will take you further than any known wisdom. Because though you may be wise, you’re not wise enough to know everything.”
“Okay. I feel that. We’ll always need assistance is what you’re saying, right?”
“Exactly. But here’s the most important part. The assistance won’t always come from the initial source.”
Derrick had a befuddled expression on his face.
Marvin smiled, “Let me break it down for you, D’. When I needed a job, I knew a person who was working where I wanted to be but, they didn’t have the clout to even get me an interview. Fortunately for me, though, they knew someone with such clout. They spoke to the person in question and, based on their relationship, this person spoke to the hiring manager on my behalf. A week later, I was called in for an interview and right after the fact, they hired me.”
“Wow! That’s dope, Bro.”
“Indeed, it is. So, it’s good to always do right by people because we never know. They may be the answer to our prayers.”
“Speaking of prayers. I often wonder why my prayers go unanswered.”
“Well, the answer is usually within the question. So, what do you do after you pray?”
“I mean, I live my life. Am I expected to do something special?”
“Let me ask you a better question. How are you looking to have your prayers answered?”
Derrick had another confused expression on his face.
“Do you believe you can just ask for something and it’ll be hand delivered to you?”
“Come on now Bro, you know I don’t think that,” Derrick chuckled.
“So, what do you think, D?”
“Truthfully, I’ve never thought about it like that.”
“Well, let me give you my portion of understanding. After we pray, we’re expected to do what it takes, morally now, to get what we want. The first thing we need to do is believe. If we don’t believe, nothing will happen. After we believe now we need to come up with a plan, and part of that plan is to network with people. People are the ones who will help with our prayers becoming a reality. But if we have a poor attitude, we’ll block our potential blessings. No one wants to be in the presence of a person with a poor attitude.”
“I know that’s right, Bro.”
“But a poor attitude doesn’t just consist of how we treat others, it’s also about how we treat ourselves as well. Being impatient is a surefire way to have people distance themselves from us. It will make them feel as if we’re not serious about our goal, as well as have them thinking we’re not appreciative of their assistance.”
“Damn, Bro. You dropping jewels.”
Marvin chuckled, “I’m just sharing with you what others shared with me. A great attitude and patience will take us far in life. Both have been partially responsible for my success.”
“Partially, Bro. What’s that all about?”
“Well, there are other factors to factor in. Like our skill set. The level of our skill set will play a major part in our journey. It’s not just about being able to do the job, it’s also about being able to do it properly as well. We must never forget that we’re not the only applicant. Companies want the best people, and this includes overall, not just in certain areas. We need to be solid in all areas. Showing up on time, coming to give our best work ethic when we arrive, having a great attitude, and having patience with people who will differ from us.”
“Marv’, this is heavy stuff. But I’m loving it though. So, do you think you could help me get a job where you are?”
“I could definitely put in a good word for you, and to the right person. But here’s the dilemma, D’. You’re not qualified to fill any of the positions. Now, if you’re willing to change this, I’ll help you in every way.”
“Damn. That engineering stuff is that serious, huh?”
“It is indeed. But it’s not beyond being learned. You just have to really want it. And you got me here willing and ready to assist you.”
“Alright, Marv’. I’m going to give it some thought. But in the meantime, could you point me toward something I could do now?”
“Absolutely, D’. What type of friend would I be if I didn’t help you out in your time of need? I’ll make some calls tomorrow and you’ll have at least five interviews lined up.”
“I appreciate you, Bro.”
“Likewise. Now, let’s get out of here. My wife needs some of my time and attention,” Marvin smiled.
Derrick chuckled, “I feel you on that, Marv’.”
The two men stood up and walked towards the exit of the restaurant.
